Apex Legends announced an update to some of its premium skins, altering the appearance of various iron sights to prevent abuse in competition.

Apex Legends is changing several premium skins to reduce unfair competitive advantages.

Publisher Electronic Arts revealed the change to its skins in a blog post on its site. Namely, the changes target the Heat Sink reactive skin for the VK-47 Flatline rifle and the Aim Down Sights (ADS) skin, which many players reported as feeling superior when aiming at targets. As a result, these and other skins deemed to give players an unfair advantage received slight alterations to make them fairer for competitive arenas.

Other skins received revamps owing to a disadvantage instead. The blog post showed before and after examples of the Flatline "Revelations" skin from the Gaiden Event, which some fans felt decreased visibility too much. Apex Legend's update to the Flatline skin reduces the height of the fins to better aid visibility when ADS.

In explaining its decision to make these changes, EA explained, "We believe that any competitive edge in Apex Legends should be gained by honing your skills and not due to any perceived advantages from buying gun skins. As our good friend Kuben Blisk puts it: "You kill me, you're better. I kill you, I'm better." We hope players who own these skins will appreciate these improvements and support us as we work to keep Apex Legends fun and fair."

More change-ups for the game arrived in August with the start of the new season. Apex Legends Season 14, titled "Hunted," did not cause as many massive changes to gameplay as Season 13 did. Still, it did bring with it a new legend, updates and changes to certain weapons and the addition of new items available. It also added an all-new Haunted Battle Pass, allowing players to earn new survival-inspired cosmetics.

Several popular weapons also saw significant alterations or increased availability. The Bocek, a popular compound bow considered one of the more recent and better additions of such in gaming, and the Rampage LMG became available for players to earn in the supply crates. Other major changes come in the use of ammo for certain weapons, like the Spitfire LMG and Wingman. Both recently saw their ammunition type change, with the Spitfire now regulated to light ammo and the Wingman added to the sniper kind.

Apex Legends is free-to-play on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC via Origin and Steam.
