Independent developers are preparing for the Steam platform, and it seems to be going well.

Valve is launching its own handheld game console with the goal of making the Steam library as portable as possible. But this means that developers must prepare games to work on the new system-Valheim developer Iron Gate is one such studio that brings its Viking-themed survival sandbox to the deck.

"Valheim runs almost as-is on the Steam Deck, with no actual problems, whether it's the Linux version or via Proton," Iron Gate programmer and designer Jonathan Smårs told TheGamer. "Mainly we are dealing with some controller accessibility issues and some font sizes to make sure everything is readable."

Since Steam Deck is portable, its screen is much smaller. In this regard, accessibility will be a crucial issue, because developers must work hard to translate content designed for larger displays or TVs into smaller screens—Valheim has made this leap. For more PC-oriented games (such as strategy simulation games), this may be more difficult, but we have already seen games like "Civilization" with zoom function on Nintendo Switch. Hope that other developers will notice and lean towards accessibility like Iron Gate.

Preparing for the operating system of the Steam platform is another problem that developers must solve, while also considering unique controllers. However, studios with a Switch port are one step ahead—Nintendo’s own handheld computers cannot currently use Walheim, but Hypercharge is a game about action figures and toys to live and fight each other.

"We make sure that the game is properly built on Linux," Hypercharge: Unboxed told TheGamer. "We have received support for Nintendo Switch, so functions such as gyroscope and handheld nature have been set up and can run. We also have Steam controller support internally, which means that button prompts have been implemented."

The transition sounds like a smooth transition, even if some extra work is required.

The most exciting thing about Switch is that it immediately offers so many games: "We think it's great," Hypercharge said. “This device is really special. It’s incredible to have such powerful features. Different games from other developers we’ve tested run very well, and most games don’t require much setup. See how our own games can Running at full quality at 60fps is something we have never dreamed of seeing on a handheld device."

"We are very impressed with Steam Deck," Smårs added. "We are very excited about its release. Having such a huge game library on the first day should be a very interesting prospect for mobile and console gamers."
